Photograph and text by Jeff Rice.
I am an audio engineer, journalist and sound designer with a strong interest in wildlife recording. I was co-founder of the Western Soundscape Archive at the University of Utah and my recordings have been featured in libraries, major media outlets and museums across the United States. In 2013, I co-founded the Acoustic Atlas at Montana State University. I am also deeply involved in efforts to protect and restore the Puget Sound ecosystem through my work as an editor at the University of Washington Puget Sound Institute.
“And for those dwindling snatches of pure nature—a tree falling in the woods with nobody around to listen—there’s a chance we’ll hear them after all. Because Jeff Rice will have staked his microphone nearby.”
